Portrait of a gentleman

Lawrence, Thomas (1769-1830)

This picture bears an uncanny resemblance to King George IV when Prince of Wales, in the 1780s. It was at the time of sale in 1943 that the picture was indeed thought to be King George IV and by John Hoppner. It was later suggested by Kenneth Garlick that the picture was an early work by Sir Thomas Lawrence. The sitter has not been identified.
