Portrait of a bearded old man

Flinck, Govaert (1615-60)

Although unsigned, this picture is likely to be an early work by Flinck, when he was still heavily under Rembrandt’s influence. This is especially obvious in the carefully modulated tones of the background, and the way they relate to the figure itself.  Also derived from Rembrandt is the meticulous treatment of the face and the delineation of the moustache and beard. The sitter has not been identified.
