Portrait of a woman

French School, (17th century)

The sitter of this portrait has not been identified, nor is there any clue as to her possible origins, although she is richly dressed. The painting is close in style to Simon Vouet especially in the distinctive colour scheme. Yet the picture lacks Vouet’s distinctive mannerisms, which suggests that the painting is by one of his numerous pupils, to be dated in the late 1650s or the early 1660s. The closest comparison is the work of Jacques Stella.
