Portrait of a Venetian gentleman wearing the order of San Marco

Bassano, Leandro da Ponte (1557-1622)

In general style, this painting is derived from the work of Titian’s middle period. Titian was the originator of the ‘grave’ male portrait. Here the sitter is imbued with a sense of intellectual seriousness emphasised by the book on the carpet-covered table. There is no suggestion on record as to the possible identity of the sitter, but the Order of St. Marco which he wears, identifies him as a resident of Venice even if he was not of Venetian origin.
