Portrait of baron Achille Seillière (1813-1873)

Dubufe, Edouard Louis (1820-83)

This pair of portraits epitomises the new bourgeois style which became fashionable after the fall of Napoleon III in 1870.  In spite of political uncertainty, the French middle classes were prosperous which is reflected in the type of art they preferred, solid, unadventurous but competent.  In the realism of these portraits, there is still the residual influence of neoclassical portraiture of nearly one hundred years before.
