Portrait of Jean Le Veneur

French School, (16th century)

This enigmatic portrait is tentatively identified by a label on the back written in 1936. The sitter is thought to be Jean Le Veneur on grounds of the armorial baton which he carries. The old attribution to François Clouet cannot yet be verified as there is no closely similar work by him. The painting is under strong Netherlandish influence like all French portrait painting in the middle years of the 16th century.
