Portrait of John Cockburn Ross of Shanwick, Ross-shire

Raeburn, Henry (1756-1823)

This picture belongs to the type of three-quarter length much favoured by the artist, especially when the sitter did not require one of the artist’s ambitious full-lengths. The painting is very close in style to Raeburn’s Mrs. George Patterson of Castle Huntly of 1790 (Dundee, McManus Galleries), and probably dates from approximately the same time.
