It is likely that this picture represents the upper part of the right hand shutter of a small altarpiece painted by Isenbrandt, while the rest of which is as yet unidentified. The Saint depicted does not immediately have any obvious attributes, but it is likely that she is St. Barbara, as the artist has indistinctly introduced the tower traditionally associated with her legend, in the lower left hand corner. The extreme softness of both the figure and the landscape suggests that the picture was painted late in Isenbrandt’s career when the influence of David had all but disappeared.
