Study of the heads of three old men

Jordaens, Jacob (1593-1678)

On grounds of its loosely painted style with obvious blurring of the edges, it is likely that this spirited study belongs to the artist’s last period when his output diminished considerably. Two of the three heads appear in several pictures by Jordaens dating from various stages in the 1650s. The old men were obviously favourites for Jordaens in these last years of great productivity.
