The Death of Seneca

Giordano, Luca (1634-1705)

It is likely that this picture had as a pendant A Suicide of Cato, especially as another version of the Death of Seneca, at Chalon-sur-Saône has as it’s pendant a Suicide of Cato. The artist has chosen to interpret the subject (see also Honthorst in an intimate way with the Philosopher accepting death with equanimity). The picture is in the artist’s later manner where there is a marked increase in the chromatic intensity of the colours.
