The miracle of lactation

Schut, Cornelius I (1597-1655)

The main figure in this picture is Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153), best known as the founder of the Cistercian Order which spread throughout Europe soon after his death. The Saint receives on his lips three drops of milk from the breast of the statue of the Virgin. The picture is very close in style to Rubens’ late work and on those grounds should be dated c1640.
