The Penitent Magdalen

Masucci, Agostino (c.1691-1758)

By the time this picture was painted, the subject of The Penitent Magdalen had become a rare one having fallen out of favour by the end of the seventeenth century. It had also become the habit of painters to take small parts of their larger pictures and turn them into agreeable compositions rather than conceiving them in their own right. It is likely that this picture falls into this category.
