Reynolds was in Rome in the spring of 1750 when he made several copies of the old masters. This one is unrecorded but is a sketch version of Raphael’s vast and celebrated fresco in the Stanze in the Vatican, Rome. The monumentality and breadth of Raphael’s composition so carefully recorded by Reynolds was to exert little or no influence on the artist’s later work.
