This view of Tivoli is entirely idealised, partly for the sake of the composition and partly to include as many of the familiar monuments as possible. The height of the hills is exaggerated as are the distant mountains. In spite of this, the artist has given a freshness to the view, quite different from the numerous seventeenth century representations of the subject, popularised by Gaspard Dughet (q.v.). The figures which are included in the landscape suggest by their costume that the scene is intended to be taken from antiquity with all the buildings intact in their splendour.
