Morland, Henry Robert (1730-97)

This nocturnal genre scene is typical of Morland, who introduced such novelties when at the time they were rare in British art but common in the Netherlands. The possible date for this picture means that it may anticipate the better known work of Joseph Wright of Derby. In Morland’s case these works were often painted with engraving in mind.
