In the entirely legendary story of St Veronica she is reputed to have taken her veil and wiped Christ’s face, as he carried his Cross towards his Crucifixion.  Christ’s face then became miraculously imprinted on the material. This became a favoured subject in the Baroque. The actual procession to Cavalry as shown here is much rarer.
