This picture seems to anticipate the realist works of Gustave Courbet, which generally date from a decade later. Indeed although this picture was painted in 1839, according to the signature and the date, it was not exhibited at the Salon until 1850.  It is in any event remarkably early for such a realistic approach depicting the lives of peasants.
