Holy Family with Angels holding the Instruments of the Passion

Scarsella, Ippolito (Scarsellino) (1551-1620)

The instruments of the Passion are more often associated with Northern art, especially the Mass of St. Gregory. Here the objects depicted anticipate the Passion, which is a much rarer interpretation of the subject. Given the lightness of the palette and the density of local colour, the painting is likely to come from middle part of the artist’s career, as the composition is derived from a more detailed work by Garofalo which is in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden. Scarsellino is known for continuing the Renaissance tradition.
