In its rather loose painting style and classical overtones this picture comes from the very end of Wtewael’s long career. In these last paintings Wtewael showed himself to be fully aware of the newly fashionable classicising elements, which dominated both Utrecht and Haarlem, but he never abandoned his mannerist composition.
