Holy Family with the Infant St. John the Baptist and St. Elizabeth

Hemessen, Jan van (c.1500-75)

In common with some works by Van Hemessen, there is here an element of derivation. The face of the Virgin is taken from Raphael’s Madonna of Loreto in the Musée Condé at Chantilly.  A copy of Raphael’s complete composition, in the Palazzo Bianco in Genoa, has been attributed to Van Hemessen himself, who would have known the painting from other copies, rather than the original by Raphael which was at the time in the church of S. Maria del Popolo, in Rome.
