Netherlandish

Holy Family with St. John the Baptist

Orley, Bernard van (c.1488-1541)

There is a more elaborate version of this composition in the Louvre in Paris where a great deal more detail is visible. This is partly caused by the fact that the surface of the Schorr painting here has worn very thin and the colours have become transparent, thus giving a rather faded effect to the panel, which is untypical of the strong colours and bold masses of the artist’s well-preserved works. The treatment of the Holy Family with St. Joseph is a conventional one is largely based on Italian models. The picture should be dated in the 1520s as the Louvre version is clearly dated 1521, and later in his career Van Orley’s style became even more Italianate.
