This picture is unique in Heimbach’s output for its subject matter, even though the style of painting is familiar from almost all the artist’s other works. The gothic architecture of the church is probably imaginary although in its austerity it reflects style found in North Germany. As was the custom at the time, the interior of the church has been re-arranged so that the congregation faces the preacher rather than the altar, which has been dismantled. All the Christian images have also been removed from the interior, as the Protestants had rejected all forms of image worship – even painted altarpieces were banned from Protestant churches.
