This small copper is probably one of the artist’s earliest surviving works, painted while he was still under the influence of late 16th century mannerist painting, especially in Antwerp.  The subject is treated conventionally, according to tradition, but the artist’s personal contribution is the delicate, yet forceful handling of the paint, and the luminosity of the colour.
