Christ as Salvator Mundi

German School, (16th century)

The powerful image of Christ the Salvator Mundi (Savour of the World) is probably derived from a lost work by Jan van Eyck which is known from two old copies, the first formerly in the Swinburne collection at Newcastle upon Tyne, and the second formerly in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin (destroyed in World War II).  The type was used by many Netherlandish painters of the later 15th and early 16th centuries, and the artist here could have taken it from any of the numerous variations made over a long period.
