Aufbruch zur Gondelfahrt

Makart, Hans (1840-84)

Although on a relatively small scale, the picture reflects the artist’s penchant for grand and magnificent scenes. The fantastically decorated gondola is set against looming architecture and a park cluttered with urns and statues. The departing figures are in elaborate renaissance costumes, the richly attired gentleman assisting his lady to embark on the gondola. They would hardly fit in so small a vessel, but logic is not the artist’s concern.
