The attribution to Coxcie of this panel is traditional, as another version of it appeared in Vienna in 1908, also called Coxcie. The composition is not derived from Sebastiano del Piombo (q.v.), and Michelangelo has been suggested as the source.  The handling is rather different, as would be expected, if the artist were creating a new composition.  Comparison can be made with other later works painted by the aged Coxcie in Mechelen, a number of which remain in the Church of Sint Rombout there.
