Pater, Jean-Baptiste Joseph (1695-1736)

Pater is known primarily for scenes of this type and very few of the artist’s other pictures deviate from this pattern. The model is essentially the work of Antoine Watteau, even though Pater gave the formula a distinctive touch. Such pictures did not usually refer to an actual event but were intended to depict an idealised country life which only existed in the mind.
