An old woman

Lievens, Jan the Elder (1607-74)

This picture forms part of a small group of ‘tronies’, painted by Lievens when he was strongly under the influence of Rembrandt. Such works were painted by both artists, some of those by Lievens only being identified in recent years, such as the so-called Head of Rembrandt’s mother, formerly with Oscar and Peter Johnson in London. The model of the old woman was also used by Rembrandt himself in the Presentation in the Temple in the Kunsthalle, Hamburg.
