A Vestal Virgin

Loo, Louis Michel van (1707-71)

Although the artist’s career was primarily as a portraitist, he also executed a small number of subject pictures which anticipate a Neoclassical style. The Vestal Virgin was a popular subject in France in the eighteenth century. Some pictures show the hapless figure being buried alive, the punishment for losing their virginity while guarding the sacred temple.
