An old man sitting in an interior

Lepicie, Nicolas-Bernard (1735-84)

The general style of this picture is an updating of Dutch seventeenth-century genre painting which enjoyed enormous popularity in eighteenth-century France. Indeed Lépicié is known to have copied works by Rembrandt. His pictures were, however, essentially sentimental in their approach with the poor elevated to a kind of wholesome dignity which they may never have had in life. The ragged clothes are artistically arranged.
