Allegory of Vanity

Cossiers, Jan (1600-71)

Allegories of this type were popular in the first half of seventeenth century. The female model represents the ideal of beauty of the period.  While the subject matter is essential caravaggesque, the handling of the paint suggests the influence of Rubens (q.v.).  The picture was probably painted late in the artist’s career.
