Deposition from the Cross

Lupicini, Giovanni Battista (1575-1645)

This small copper depicts the moment immediately after the Deposition from the Cross, with the limp body of Christ supported by Joseph of Arimathea, while the Virgin clasps her hands in grief. The symbols of the Cross are seen bottom right, in the shape of the sponge soaked in vinegar, and the three nails used to fix Christ to the Cross itself. In the background is the dome of the Temple of Jerusalem.
