This landscape belongs to the end of the tradition initiated by Joachim Patinir (c.1480-1524), and continued by Herri met de Bles (q.v.). It therefore anticipates the achievements of Pieter Bruegel the elder in the 1560s. Even though as a whole such compositions tend to appear somewhat artificial, they are often based on naturalistic elements put together in a highly composed way. There are also elements of aerial perspective, derived from knowledge of Leonardo da Vinci and his followers.
