Mercury with the sleeping Argus & Io

Mola, Pier Francesco (1612-66)

Mercury was sent by Jupiter to kill the giant Argus whose role was to guard Io. Mercury holds a pipe which was intended to send Argus to sleep. It is likely that this sombre landscape is a mature work by the artist painted after his return to Rome in 1647.
