Paysage en banlieue

Raffaelli, Jean Francois (1850-1924)

This picture represents Rafaëlli’s more academic side.  The treatment is more soberly realistic than many Impressionist works which often use a brighter colour scheme.  It is, however, to be remembered that it was their approach to subject matter, especially of the suburbs, which set the Impressionists apart from their contemporaries.  In this picture the banality of the suburban scene is perfectly realised.
