Portrait of a gentleman

Troost, Cornelis (1697-1750)

This rather solemn portrait belongs to the end of the tradition of Dutch portraiture which had continued from the seventeenth century. An entirely new style was to be introduced towards the end of the eighteenth century, under French influence. Apart from the costume and wig, the picture is entirely in the manner of the previous century.
