Portrait of Amy Jones (Mrs. John Joseph Jones)

Millais, John Everett (1829-96)

This pair of portraits comes from the later part of Millais’ career when he had entirely abandoned his pre-Raphaelite style. The extensive use of brownish tones betrays the influence of Sir Joshua Reynolds whose work at that time was still popular with collectors. The direct approach to the sitters, however, contrasts with Reynolds reflecting a strong influence of seventeenth-century Spanish painting.
