Portrait of Father Gahagan, half-length (with Anton von Maron)

Mengs, Anton Raphael (1728-79)

Father John Thorpe, for whom the picture appears to have been painted, was Lord Arundel of Wardour’s agent in Rome, and was a supporter of Pompeo Batoni. Thorpe was also involved in the commission of the altarpiece painted by Mengs for the Chapel of All Souls College, Oxford. In this instance the drapery was painted by Von Maron.
