Self-portrait wearing academic robes

Richmond, George (1809-96)

Although this portrait is a rather self-important record, it is painted with a great freshness of approach, avoiding the chocolate-brown tones which characterise so much Victorian portraiture. The artist received honorary degrees from both Oxford and Cambridge. The one from Oxford was awarded in the 1860s and this is the probable date of the painting.
