This large scale composition is an adaptation of one of a series of pictures painted by the artist for the church at Scherpenheuvel, Belgium. Such sets of paintings from outside the Rubens studio are rare. In general style, there is obvious Italian influence, but the influence of Caravaggio, while visible, is limited.
