The Deposition from the Cross

Isenbrandt or Isenbrant, Adriaen (c.1490-1551)

This picture is based on a well known large composition by Gerard David (c.1460-1523) in the Frick Collection, New York. There has been a continual dispute about the precise dating of the Frick picture which affects the approximate dating for this derivation. It is likely, however, that the Frick picture represents Gerard David’s last phase, just before his death in 1523, when his palette had become rather darker and almost slatey. This would theoretically place all the variants at approximately this time. However, in the case of Isenbrandt, he continued to repeat the well known compositions of David with an ever increasing softness for the rest of his career.
