The Evangelist Mark

Reni, Guido (1575-1642)

The Evangelist Mark, writer of the second of the Four Gospels was the First Bishop of Alexandria and was martyred there. According to tradition his relics were translated from Alexandria to Venice in the 9th century where they remain. The Saint is usually shown holding his Gospel. With its characteristic freedom of brush work and lightness of palette, the picture is a good example of the work from the artist’s last decade in Bologna.
