The Four Evangelists, Saints Matthew, Mark, Luke and John the Evangelist are frequently depicted together as writers of the Gospels named after them. They are shown with their personal symbols, and are watched over by the dove upper left itself symbolising the Holy Ghost who inspires the Gospels themselves. St. John the Evangelist is shown with the eagle symbolic of his exile on the Island of Patmos where he wrote The Revelations. St. Mark on the far right is shown with his traditional lion, although here the lion has no wings. St. Luke on the left is seen with his winged ox, one of the apocalyptic beasts, and St. Matthew is shown writing his Gospel.
